Special Educational Needs

At Immanuel Online School, we welcome all students, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Understanding Support in an Online Setting

As an online school, our support differs from that of a physical school. While we have experienced consultants who specialise in SEN and we provide an academic and pastoral mentor for each student, it is important to note we are not able to provide in-person interventions or bespoke one-to-one support. The role of a parent, guardian, or supervisor remains essential (as home educators) in ensuring that students with additional needs receive the help and resources they require.

We offer a 'Reading and Writing Toolkit' self-paced course on the learning portal where parents/students can take informal assessments for dyslexia under parental supervision and be signposted to the relevant support.

Parental Responsibility for Assessment

We encourage parents to be proactive in seeking assessments if they suspect their child might have an undiagnosed learning difficulty such as dyslexia or ADHD. While we will always endeavour to flag any concerns that arise during tutorials, the responsibility for obtaining a formal diagnosis and arranging necessary interventions is with the parent or guardian.

We strongly recommend that parents seek formal assessments for specific learning needs, such as dyslexia, and arrange suitable support where required. In cases where it becomes clear that a student would benefit from a more specialist setting or additional one-to-one support beyond what we can provide, we may also suggest alternative educational provision. Additionally, for students with disabilities or significant learning needs, we strongly advise arranging a one-to-one home tutor to provide personalised assistance and ensure they receive the tailored support necessary for their progress and well-being. This could really enhance and support their progress alongside the IOS curriculum.

Access to Differentiated Learning

We understand that students learn in different ways and we strive to offer flexibility within our teaching methods. However, due to the nature of online education, we are unable to provide fully bespoke differentiated materials for individual students. We do, however, encourage parents and supervisors to work closely with our tutors to implement strategies that support their child's learning.

Balancing Independence and Support

Online schooling offers a balance between structured education and independent learning. While our students benefit from live tutorials, interactive lessons and a wealth of online resources, it is essential that they have a dedicated adult who can provide guidance and additional support where needed.

We are committed to providing a welcoming and supportive learning environment for all students. If you have any questions about SEN provision at Immanuel Online School, please feel free to contact us.
